Hurricane Fran Hits Chesapeake Beach, Maryland
September 6, 1996
Looking out at the Chesapeake Bay from the beach in front of
our house
Waves breaking over the boardwalk on Atlantic Avenue in North
Beach
Another shot of Atlantic Avenue
The railing on the boardwalk is disintegrating
The spray is so severe, you can hardly tell what you are looking
at, but it is more of the Atlantic Avenue boardwalk, which was later completely
destroyed
Looking at the boardwalk from a little further out
Another shot of the beach in front of our house. The picnic
tables and catamaran were rescued, but the grassy area in the foreground
was completely washed away a few hours later. This exposed all of the tree's
roots, and it is now dying and in danger of falling. It is going to have
to be removed.
Someone is going to have trouble getting into their car! The
sterns of the boats are higher than the roof of the car!
The waves in the Rod 'n' Reel parking lot were almost big enough
to go surfing!
The recently completed seawall in front of Chesapeake Station
performed admirably.
Another shot of the seawall, showing the angry seas.
It was an incredible day around here. Most of the damage in
the area wasn't too bad, but we lost the beach in front of our homes, and
the Atlantic Avenue boardwalk was destroyed. We were lucky it wasn't worse!
